The piece was one of four orchestral pieces commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2006 at the opening of Millennium Park. The melody is in C minor scale or maqām Nahawand.
Samāʿī is an instrumental form consisting of four sections, each followed by a fifth transitional section called taslīm (refrain); ARBRCRDR. All sections follow a 10/8 rhythmic cycle called samāʿī thaqīl (3+2+2+3) except for the D section, which follows a contrasting rhythm often in a compound meter. The video recording is by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, with Issa Boulos and friends featured as a takht ensemble.
The purchase price includes all parts and the score, including Bb instruments and Eb instruments. The piece is also available in several other arrangements with different instrumentation. Click here to submit a request or make further inquiries.
