In 2000, Issa Boulos composed Speak Out as a “musical situation” — a structured conversation where multiple voices engage, moderate, or observe. Each participant enters with distinct phrasing, speech rhythms, tonalities, temperaments, modes, moods, interests, meanings, and varying degrees of involvement or care. Discussions unfold in diverse contexts, and this is one among many that Boulos transcribed and transformed into a musical framework.
In this form, the evolution of the conversation itself drives the composition’s structure and musical value—determined not by meaning or importance, but by movement and interaction. The sense of beginning and conclusion depends entirely on the discussion’s progression and the participants’ shared understanding. Ultimately, the topic becomes secondary, even subjective.
