Issa Boulos composed In Peace (Fi Salam) in 2008 as a heartfelt tribute to his late nephew Wajd, who tragically lost his life in a car accident. Wajd was not only a gifted saxophonist but also a vibrant young man known for his sharp wit, generous heart, and magnetic charm. His presence left a lasting imprint on everyone who knew him, and Boulos sought to capture that spirit through music that expressed both sorrow and serenity.
Set in an intricate 5/8 rhythm (divided 2+3), the piece seamlessly fuses Eastern and Western musical languages. Boulos employs modal jazz harmonies alongside the microtonal nuances of the Arab maqam, creating a soundscape that feels both rooted and transcendent. The melody passes gently between the flute, bass clarinet, ʿud, and buzuq, weaving a delicate dialogue among timbres that symbolize remembrance and continuity. Beneath this melodic interplay, the piano, bass, and drum set provide a steady yet fluid rhythmic foundation, grounding the emotional flow and supporting each solo voice with quiet strength.
Through this synthesis of traditions, Boulos evokes a deep personal reflection on loss and peace. In Peace (Fi Salam) stands as a testament to his mastery of cross-cultural composition and his ability to channel grief into beauty—bridging the solemnity of mourning with the calm acceptance of remembrance.
