The piece was one of four orchestral pieces commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2006 at the opening of Millennium Park. The melody is in C minor scale or maqām Nahawand.
Samāʿī is an instrumental form consisting of four sections, each followed by a fifth transitional section called taslīm (refrain); ARBRCRDR. All sections follow a 10/8 rhythmic cycle called samāʿī thaqīl (3+2+2+3) except for the D section, which follows a contrasting rhythm often in a compound meter. The video recording is by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, with Issa Boulos and friends featured as a takht ensemble.
The purchase price includes all parts, including the Bb and G clarinets. The piece is also available in several other arrangements with different instrumentation. Click here to submit a request or make further inquiries.
