In 1998, Issa Boulos composed a series of pieces for harp and string quartet. This piece, entitled Smoking Outside, is one piece in this collection. In his own words, Boulos described the piece and said "This composition delves into the complex and contradictory world of smokers, myself included." This avant-garde piece employs a wide range of extended techniques across all instruments to create a sonic landscape that mirrors the absurdity and desperation of smokers' behaviors. It explores the following themes: The piece explores several contradictory themes: Resilience vs. Pathetic Behavior; Dedication vs. Absurdity; and Emotional Relief vs. Self-Criticism. The composition utilizes unconventional playing methods to evoke the various aspects of the smoking experience and alternates between soothing, harmonious moments and jarring, discordant outbursts.
By pushing the boundaries of traditional string quartet and harp techniques, "Smoking Outside" creates a visceral, often uncomfortable listening experience that mirrors the conflicted emotions and physical discomfort of smokers braving the elements for their fix. The work stands as both a personal reflection and a broader commentary on the human capacity for self-destructive behavior in pursuit of fleeting pleasure.
