Ureshii Hinamatsuri (With Voice)

Kōyō Kawamura* (1897-1946 [ (real name: Naonori Kawamura]). Ureshii Hinamatsuri (Happy Hinamatsuri) was released in 1936, with lyrics by Hachiro Sato (sometimes referred to as Saburo Yamano); the song became an instant hit. Hina means doll, and matsuri means festival, so Hina Matsuri (雛祭り) is literally Doll Festival. Girls dress up on this day in their best kimonos. Some girls will dress up like dolls and have little parties. Although it is a song about a joyful event and the title says ‘I am happy,’ it falls on a minor key like most of the songs that are composed using the traditional Japanese Yona-nuke scale. In 2007 (Heisei 19), the song was selected as one of the top 100 Japanese songs.

* Despite dying young, he composed more than 1,000 nursery rhymes, including songs that will remain popular today.
